Countryside Council for Wales - Interactive Map

The CCW has an interactive map that shows you local and national nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Wales. You can search the map with a placename, postcode, reserve name or coordinates. It will then show you the boundaries of the reserve. Below the link I've given you simple instructions on how to use the map. By default it does show rather a lot of information.

Countryside Council for Wales - protected areas, interactive map

To use the map you need to set up what you want to look for (layers) as the map by default shows a lot of information. You can also search using OS grid coordinates (see step 8)

  1. Open the map and when it loads click on the 'Open' tab on the left of the map.
  2. Click on the + sign at the bottom for 'Map Key'.
  3. Untick 'International Sites' and 'Landscape Protected Areas'. Leave 'Domestic Sites' ticked.
  4. Then click the + sign at the top for 'Search' and select your choice of 'Places' or 'Postcode'. In this example it is a place. Enter the name (Barry Island in this example). When it shows you a list of found locations select the one you want and click 'Update Map'.
  5. The map will now reload with your location in the centre. Use the zoom + and - to zoom in or out.
  6. The SSSI area on Barry Island can now be seen.
  7. To get information about the area, click the i button at the top of the map and then click the SSSI area for details. If you then click on the URL shown in the information box you will get more details.
  8. If you want to enter coordinates, follow steps 1, 2 and 3 to set up the visible layers. Then copy the British Grid reference from the cache page (under the page coordinates) and paste into the map, then click Update.
