Guidelines for placing caches (general and UK/Ireland)
Before placing your cache you should read the guidelines to ensure your cache can be placed correctly. Whilst most guidelines are general there are some specific guidelines for the UK which may mean caches cannot be placed without specific permission or may not be allowed at all. This may be as a result of a landowner/manager request, reasons of sensitivity to the location or reasons of security. The reviewers may initially refuse to publish a cache if it fails to meet one of these guidelines.
The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) maintains a database of landowner agreements where caching is or isn't allowed. The agreements explain what is required of you when placing a cache. Some landowners/managers may allow caches to be placed without seeking prior permission as long as the guidelines are followed. Others may request you apply for permission first. You should consult this database when looking for a location for your cache. Many of the agreements have maps which show you an area. Others don't which does make finding out whether your cache is or isn't in such a location a little more difficult. The larger landowner/manager/other areas in the UK are shown on the Multi-Agency Government Information for the Countryside (MAGIC) map which is the main mapping resource the reviewers use. MAGIC covers England primarly with some coverage for Wales and Scotland. There are mapping resources available for Wales and Scotland which are explained on the Map Resources page. You can use MAGIC and the other mapping resources yourself to search locations.
For full details of the landowner/manager/other areas where the guidelines apply and the mapping resources available please see the page on Permission.
