Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM) and Archaeological Sites
Guidelines: Inappropriate or Non-publishable Placement - Cache placement is in an area that is highly sensitive to additional foot and vehicular traffic including but not limited to archaeological sites, historical sites and cemeteries.
Caches in archaeological sites such as iron age hill forts, monasteries, abbeys, Roman sites, barrows, settlements or enclosure and so on* are absolutely not allowed unless you can provide clear proof from the organisation that owns/manages the site that the cache location is approved. You may however use such sites as clues and questions to answer for multi-caches, but the final location or any physical stages must not be within the boundaries of such sites without permission. Please note that the guideline above still applies to these 'clue' stages in case the extra traffic of people searching may cause damage to the site. It is often difficult to identify such sites. The Ordnance Survey 1:50000 scale (Landranger) maps do show these sites (see right) but the actual boundaries are not always clearly defined. For England the government MAGIC map does show Scheduled Ancient Monuments which are sites that have been given special protection in law. Such sites in England are scheduled English Heritage. The image below shows the site of the Roman amphitheatre in Cirencester and shows the considerable extent of the SAM. Compare this with the OS map which only shows the amphitheatre itself.
