Forestry Commission Wales - Interactive Map

This interactive map allows you to find and view Forestry Commission owned/managed land within Wales. There are many agreements with the FC for Wales (and the whole UK) in the Geocaching Association of Great Britain Landowner database. In nearly all cases the FC require you to get permission first before placing a cache.

How to get OS GB coordinates to use in the interactive map

To use the map you need to set up what you want to look for (layers) as the map by default doesn't show any basic information.

  1. Open the map. It defaults to the whole of Wales. On the right is a control box you can use to select layers and find a location. You need to select the Folder/layer "Forestry Commission - FC Legal Boundary" but can't at this zoom level (it is greyed out). The easiest way is to click the small red cross that appears beside the layer, this will automatically zoom in the map and the layer is then selected. Alternatively you can continue with your search/zoom and then select the layer.
  2. You can search either by region (see step 5) or search by OSGB grid reference or by postcode using the contol box tab Find. This shows what you can search by. Click on either Grid Reference (see step 3) or Post code (see step 4) to start your search.
  3. Searching by grid reference. The map uses the OS Landranger grid reference format of SN 624299. See the link above on how to get OSGB coordinates to use in the map. If you use Memory Map to obtain the coordinates they appear in the full 10 digit format like this: SN 62449 29997 you need to remove the last two digits of the Easting and Northing from this: SN 62449 29997 to this: SN 624299 in order for them to work. You can also use the OS X and Y Easting and Northing of 262450 229950 .
  4. Enter a postcode to search by.
  5. If you want you can do a more general search by area by selecting the FC region from the box under the map. When you select it (example is Monmouthshire) the map automatically zooms to that area.
  6. In the control box on the right, click the layers tab and make sure the layer 'FC Legal Boundary' is ticked. The map now shows the area you've selected with the woodland layer showing in blue.
  7. Use the zoom and pan control (top left above map) to zoom in and pan round the map to the precise area you've selected.
